Introduction

This exceptional Aston Martin DB6 has been nearly 40 years with the current owner, who achieved a personal goal with its acquisition and has cherished and improved the car consistently during his stewardship.

A personal introduction to Aston Martin Works by Victor Gauntlett, saw the car undergo a major body restoration in the 1990's and that same friendship saw the car join trips to Le Mans

h

With an immaculate service history where improvements in engine and body are both supported by extensive photography, you would expect a superlative car and that is clearly what Classic & Sportscar thought when they chose this car as an example for a three car test putting the Aston up against a Ferrari 330 GT and a Maserati Sebring - judged an overwhelming victory for Newport Pagnell's finest!

So with this car, you are buying not only a superlative car but one with a provenance and history to support its value in an ever changing market.

Background

Background:

After rejecting proposals for a replacement for the DB5 from Touring of Milan, the decision was made by Aston Martin to focus on their own development car, registered, 4 YMC. Testing it in a wind tunnel for the first time in February 1965, showed the need for work to counteract the test car’s rear end lift. So, the final development phases saw a DB5 chassis, suitably lengthened and titled MP219, with a rear spoiler and abbreviated Kamm tail that Aston Martin had previously incorporated in sports racers.

The decision was made to progress MP 219 as the Aston Martin DB6 although its de Dion rear axle was replaced with a live axle on cost grounds. So, the new car, announced at the London Motor Show in October 1965, had a wheelbase extended by 3.75 inches with the extra inserted just ahead of the rear wheel arches and this allowed the roofline to be raised by an inch, while a further two inches of headroom was gained by reworking the seat squabs. Reducing the length of the trailing arms on the rear suspension, gave more elbow room at the back.

The seat shapes were changed to give greater shoulder and lumbar support while the dashboard changed only with the size and layout of individual dials. Externally, however, horizontally slatted grille beneath the number plate allowed better air flow to the oil cooler and visual symmetry of the new arrangement was maintained with a split bumper at the front that was mirrored at the rear of the car. Mechanically, the car was very similar to the Aston Martin DB5 with 3 SU carburettors fitted as standard. There were a number of items that a customer could specify at no extra cost – a Powr-Lok limited slip differential and chrome wire wheels. An electric aerial was fitted as standard, although the radio, which would be a customer choice, was considered an extra and was charged accordingly.

Summary:

This is not the first DB6 that we have had which was originally destined for the US – the purchaser of that car, registered it with its original detail and it appeared to ease its passage with him back across “the Pond”.

Irrespective of that opportunity, we believe that any discerning Aston Martin buyer – enthusiast or novice – will appreciate the depth of history that comes with this car.

The knowledge that it has been treasured for nearly forty years with a single owner, who has used the car, enjoyed the car and lavished an attention on the car that offers its next owner the very best in Aston ownership.

Vehicle History

It is wonderful to look into the history of a car that has a story to tell even before she got registered on 19th February 1968. And that story is recorded on a copy of the original build sheet where the original consignee is noted as AML Inc. – she was originally sent to the US and was allocated the chassis number DB6/2779/L! According to AML records, 2779 was one of thirty DB6 Saloons that were subsequently returned to the U.K. between May and August 1967. Thirteen were re-engineered by Aston Martin as a right-hand drive and the chassis number suffix change to an R to reflect the revised steering arrangement. 2779 was then sold to its first UK owner, a Mrs Marsh of Sheffield. The car was specified as automatic and, because of its original destination in the US, had been specified with Normalair air conditioning – rare indeed!

The current owner acquired the car in September of 1984 from a Mr Connolly of Marlborough in Wiltshire after commissioning an AA Inspection report on the car – he noted that the car had only two owners prior to Connolly but has no confirmation of the same. A copy of the AA report together with the original advert and receipt of purchase are part of a meticulous record of maintenance that he has undertaken ever since. His acquisition of the car fulfilled a long-held ambition to own an Aston and it was a wonderful coincidence that around a month after acquiring the car, the owner met Victor Gauntlett starting a friendship that continued until Victor’s sad demise.

However, as well as a subsequent introduction to the contemporary wonders of Newport Pagnell, his friendship included visits to a number of race meetings including being part of an Aston contingent to Le Mans – a contingent that included Victor’s DBR2 and DB3S.

It is interesting that in the period of two years prior to his acquisition, there is a record of the previous owner undertaking a renovation of the car so it probably looked as appealing as it does today, resplendent in the factory specified Fiesta Red with Blue leather upholstery.

However, the next owner is getting a car where the beauty is far more than just skin deep thanks to an accident/accident of fate in 1992. The car was involved in an accident and an introduction to that well-known company in Newport Pagnell was made by Victor Gauntlett! In order to return the car to roadworthy condition, it was found to need a little more than a bit of panel beating and spray. There is a wonderfully detailed photographic record produced by Aston Martin Works of the comprehensive repair and rebuild undertake.

And that is not the only important change because just two years later, the car was to be found with David Eales team at Oselli where the automatic gearbox was upgraded to a standard 5 speed manual – add to that the 2013 engine rebuild and uprating to 4.2 litre and you have what must be one of the very best DB6 saloons on the market today.

After that engine rebuild, the owner took a trip to France, stopping at Le Mans and two nights at the Hotel de France, Astons 1950’s base at Le Sarthe – no stranger to adventures in the Peak District and AMOC events, the car has proved a faithful companion.

Added to the major enhancements that have polished this gem of a car, is a service history that would be a credit to any owner – any gaps that show in the MOT history have a balancing SORN notice, every job that needed attention was attended to and if further proof were needed of that attention to detail, it came just prior to the car’s delivery to us.

It had been noted during discussions, that the under-bonnet pad was a little worn and detracted from an otherwise good-looking engine bay. When the car arrived, there was a resplendently new pad fitted and a copy invoice for the same from Aston Service Dorset.

Readers of Classic & Sportscar magazine may think that they have seen this car before – and they would be right. Their November 2009 issue carried a report entitled “GT Showdown – Aston vs Ferrari vs Maserati” and on the front page JTD 999 F is the star car. And so, it turned out in the test – she beat off the attention of a Ferrari 330GT and a Maserati Sebring to bring the victors laurels back to Newport Pagnell.

It is a fitting addition to a great story and a copy of the magazine together with a disc of the magazine photography are both in the file.

She is presented with enormous pride!
