Introduction
The present owner said the chassis benefits from 38 years in a dry climate but we would still recommend inspection All shut lines are parallel, the valley in the boot lid lines up with the rear wings and the front looks square, panel fit on this DB6 is very good but close-up, paint defects and marks become apparent. The interior appears correct and the leather original but could be enhanced by having the leather treated.
So, the perfect car for an enthusiast who appreciates the sense of history of a great car, but at the same time, realistically priced to allow the next owner to enjoy it as he has, or add their own touch to cosmetics.
Background
Background
After rejecting proposals for a replacement for the DB5 from Touring of Milan, the decision was made by Aston Martin to focus on their own development car, registered, 4 YMC. Testing it in a wind tunnel for the first time in February 1965, showed the need for work to counteract the test car’s rear end lift. So, the final development phases saw a DB5 chassis, suitably lengthened and titled MP219, with a rear spoiler and abbreviated Kamm tail that Aston Martin had previously incorporated in sports racers.
The decision was made to progress MP 219 as the Aston Martin DB6 although its de Dion rear axle was replaced with a live axle on cost grounds. So, the new car, announced at the London Motor Show in October 1965, had a wheelbase extended by 3.75 inches with the extra inserted just ahead of the rear wheel arches and this allowed the roofline to be raised by an inch, while a further two inches of headroom was gained by reworking the seat squabs. Reducing the length of the trailing arms on the rear suspension, gave more elbow room at the back.
The seat shapes were changed to give greater shoulder and lumbar support while the dashboard changed only with the size and layout of individual dials. Externally, however, horizontally slatted grille beneath the number plate allowed better air flow to the oil cooler and visual symmetry of the new arrangement was maintained with a split bumper at the front that was mirrored at the rear of the car. Mechanically, the car was very similar to the Aston Martin DB5 with 3 SU carburettors fitted as standard. There were a number of items that a customer could specify at no extra cost – a Powr-Lok limited slip differential and chrome wire wheels. An electric aerial was fitted as standard, although the radio, which would be a customer choice, was considered an extra and was charged accordingly.

The present owner has attended AMOC events, and is a Goodwood GRRC member with pilgrimage twice a year to both members meetings and revivals. He is comfortable with the patina of his DB6 and has preferred investment on the suspension, powertrain and running gear.
As a matching numbers, early example of the model, in the original livery and 5-Speed manual specification, for many, it basks in the glory associated with such an original car.
So, the perfect car for an enthusiast who appreciates the sense of history of a great car, but at the same time, realistically priced to allow the next owner to enjoy it as he has, or add their own touch to cosmetics.
We do not expect this DB6 to last long in our care.
Vehicle History
A copy of the original build sheet shows that the car was delivered on 11th January 1966 to L. Kostoris & Co Ltd. of George Street Manchester. A long-established business that operated as textile exporters until as late as 1979. The colour is noted as Dubonnet and the interior Black leather – the car today shows as having matching and original chassis/engine numbers, the only change being the original registration number of JLP 387D.
In 1975, the car went over to the sunshine of Australia where she had a number of owners, becoming, as respected specialist Brooklands Classic Cars recorded, in their research, “never a principal car of the owner and often part of a collection”. The first recorded owner “down under” was a Captain Heywood, who relinquished stewardship of the car in 1981 to a Robert Whitelaw when the mileage was around 80,000 miles. In 1984 ownership changed to an Alan Esmore and in 1988 to Darrel Holmes – the Australian registration number was NF 007 at that time and by 2000 the mileage was noted as 91,000 miles under the ownership of a Nick Faull.
At the end of 2008, this DB6 was subject to the attention of specialist Brooklands Classic Cars, Cummins Classic Cars and The Classic Throttle Shop and the Australian registration had reverted to a more prosaic AZ24WQ. She finally reverted to the last Australian owner, Justin Millican and its last Australian registration of JGM64
In 2013, it made the long journey back to the U.K. and a new home in Oxfordshire – substantial work by local Aston specialists Chicane Classics, where a spend of over £37,000 over 5 visits in 12 years, have ensured that she is a very driveable example today.
