Introduction

Number 48 of only 150, an early example with frameless door windows matching the design of the DB4GT.

This is a beautifully maintained, Concours quality example of the first and most important of Aston Martin's Superleggera designs - even more so being one of the original 150 cars that stand out from the rest with their frameless door windows and front opening bonnet.

A rare and important opportunity for an Aston enthusiast or collector.

Background

When the single pale primrose DB4 was launched at the Paris Salon in October 1958, Marcel Blondeau, the French distributor for Aston Martin approached John Wyer on the stand with tears in his eyes “This is not a car, it is a folly, but I can sell as many as you can supply.”

With a top speed of 140 mph, it was one of the fastest four seaters in the world and was on a par with the best of Italian Grand Turismos. Not wholly surprising, given the decision to have this distillation of years of Feltham ideas designed by Touring of Milan using their “Superleggera” system. The body consisted entirely of aluminium mounted on a trellis of small diameter steel tubes welded together. Body panels were attached to the trellis and clinched around angle plates which were welded to the members with graphite pads. Items like windscreen, rear window frames an angle sections for the door hinges were attached directly to the frame. The design delivered slim proportions and outstanding all-round visibility. With the body mounted on a platform chassis, the seats could be set low without resorting to deep sills. The doors, which undercut the windscreen, were wide with frameless windows – no quarter lights – and the rear windows opened hingeing on their forward edges. Easier access to the rear with its new full width rear seat, past hinged and adjustable front seats from Reutter.

The wide parcel shelf concealed the presence of a 19 gallon petrol tank while at the back of the car, the boot lid opened to floor level. The battery, with its own master switch was behind a panel in the right hand wing and the spare wheel was in a separate contained under the boot floor. Power came from the all new Tadek Marek twin overhead cam aluminium engine that weighed in 22Kg less than its predecessor. The twin cam shafts operated the valves directly through inverted steel tappets while those valves were splayed at an 80 degree angle – the seats all had inserts and the exhaust guides were all in direct contact with cooling water. The block followed the contour of the liners which combined to save weight and strengthen the structure. The crankshaft was a nitirided steel forging which ran in seven bronze bearings – the connecting rods were polished and weight graded while the pistons each had two compression rings, the top one being chrome faced. Driving through a four speed, all synchromesh gearbox and a 10 inch single, dry plate Borg and Beck clutch – the engine was quoted as developing 240 bhp, although this was, in truth, probably nearer 208 bhp. Marek had, at John Wyer’s suggestion, researched horsepower claims on American engines and had found a mean discrepancy of 32 per cent – John Wyer’s reaction was “We can’t lie that much, we can only lie 15 per cent”.

Ride and handling came courtesy of Harold Beach designed coil and wishbone front suspension and a rear set up of trailing arm and coil spring incorporating a Watts linkage. The brakes were all wound discs from Dunlop with a Lockheed servo fitted. Wire wheels with Dunlop centre locks and 16 inch Avon Turbospeed tyres as standard fitment.

At launch, Aston Martin only had two pre-production models and with one used to promote the new car, they were reluctant to entrust the other, untried and untested model to the motoring press so definitive road tests were not available, just the enthusiastic hyperbole of John Wyer. His claim, made before launch, that the car could go from a standing start to 100 mph and back to standstill in 30 seconds was faithfully reproduced in advertising material. It was on October 2nd, the day of the car’s launch in Paris that tests at MIRA proved him correct with mean times set of the feat at 27.2 seconds.

Summary:

DB4/148R is a wonderful, interesting example of this classic Aston Martin model. With a service and maintenance history from its very first owner thought to its most recent steward, this is a car that not only has the distinction of being one of those first 50 cars with the frameless windows, it has a provenance that just adds and accumulates value year by year.

As the first of the Superleggeras, the DB4 is iconic and the first 50 with the frameless windows ultimately collectable. DB4/148/R will never disappoint.

Vehicle History

A faded copy of the original build sheet for DB4/148/R is part of the extensive and comprehensive ownership history of this wonderful very early DB4 Series 1. It is unusual to refer to an Aston by its registration number rater than chassis number but throughout its colourful history, she retained that number and the enduring affection of a succession of enthusiastic owners.

First on that illustrious list is Richard Gordon, a respected surgeon but a man more renowned as the author of the “Doctor at Large” comedy books that found their way onto film and TV screens. He bought the car from Brooklands Grage in London in September 1959. A regular at Pinewood Studios, he felt a little overwhelmed by the film producer’s 2 Rolls Royces – one a convertible for summer and the other a saloon for winter – when canvassing banks for funds for her films, she would park both outside the premises.

We know the car was next owned by a Mrs B J Smith of Burgess Hill in Sussex but in 1967, the car made a move across the Irish Sea to the ownership of a Robin McKinney of Lisburn, County Antrim – a true enthusiast, he was, for many years, President of the Ulster Automobile Club.

In 1968, another owner, a Malcolm MacGregor of Belfast – also a member of the Ulster Automobile Club he was an enthusiastic member of the AMOC who competed with the car in numerous events and a contemporary photograph even has the car acting as course car on the Circuit of Ireland rally.

In the early 1970’s she came back to the mainland and into the stewardship of probably the most mechanically qualified owner. Roy Jones of Wickham Bishops in Essex as a 17 year old, had been a proud member of the Aston Martin racing team working as the legendary Jack Sopp’s “Boy” and that included being part of the Le Mans support team in 1953 which included coming back from Le Mans in YMY 307 having had to make himself a Perspex screen overnight. There is a lovely letter from Roy in the folder where he recalls “sorting” the car out, renewing the braking system, renewing valves and tappets, overhauling the carburettors and setting the timing. As well has an article recounting his Le Mans adventure, there are contemporary photos taken during his ownership.

Next on the catalogue of owners were brothers Stephen and Jeffrey Archer – Stephen will be known to many Aston Martin owners as an authoritative and respected marque expert and they both have fond memories of the car.

But in August of 1981, the car moved down to Wales where Julian Rosser, area representative for the AMOC put his mark on the car with substantial restoration work carried out by respected Aston specialists Four Ashes Garage

The history folder marks the attention of each owner and the next owner’s name appears on a large number of service and parts invoices accumulated over a 25 year period of ownership that stretched from 1994 through to 2019.

Prior to its acquisition by its current owner, the car underwent some extensive work with amongst others, RS Williams and included extensive servicing; new front and rear windscreens and associated trim; miscellaneous chassis work; boot trim; cosmetic enhancement; and a gearbox rebuild, collectively totalling a little under £17,000.

Based in the Channel Island, the current owner is an Aston Martin enthusiast renowned for his fastidious approach to the condition of his cars and a review of the work carried out by La Riche in September 2022 reflects that attention to detail and will prove a substantial bonus to the next owner.
