First auction since lockdown!

We haven’t been out to an auction since lockdown and have, like many, stuck to computer screens and descriptions to make assessments.

We are lucky on assessing many of the cars because auction inventories have been like an airport luggage reclaim conveyor belt – if you missed it first time, its sure to appear again soon.

But we remain slightly bemused by the “Seller’s Assessments” – in our experience, an owner’s assessment of their own car varies from excess deprecation that under estimates the worth of the car to unrealistic exaggeration of an old jalopy’s virtues.  Either way, not terribly useful.  Layer on the General Auction Conditions which offer no liability for any description and the value of the exercise looks very limited.

I think Buyers are now wise enough to seek professional advice on vehicle condition – noticed the likes of David Hyatt of Classic Hangar offering to check the cars at Bicester and at least the partial lifting of lockdown allowed some level of validation. But we can think of many better ways to involve the Sellers in the promotion of their cars than a tick box evaluation.

The auction itself was interesting on several levels – one of them being the way the inventory was presented – in many ways, it suited the new normal insofar as you did not have to sit through a real mix of product, grouping stock in the way they did was quite efficient use of Buyers’ time.  From out point of view, it allowed us to miss the bikes, watch the cars through to the Astons and then retire for a refreshing G & T!

One hates to generalise but it was very noticeable that the “No Reserve” cars kept the sales rate up without setting price ambitions on fire – at the same time, those with ambitious reserves either lay unsold or sold below expectations. And it wouldn’t be an auction without the anomalies – hammers coming down at one price and the results page reading something very different.

An example of one of those was one of the Aston Martins – a DB6 with a 4.2 litre engine upgrade, on Saturday afternoon recorded a hammer price of £158,000 and not sold to a results page £146,250 including premium.

But then at this sale, recording a sale on an Aston was an achievement – and it was not the product’s fault but rather the price expectations.  Bargain of the day was probably the first of the Astons, a 1954 DB2/4 – a car the Aston Man had valued in the past, she was a nice but tired example, talked down a little by the owner but unusually one that actually made its top estimate at £80,000 (£90,000 with premium).

The V8 Vantage enhanced to X Pack specification was left on the shelf as she was last summer at the Aston Sale and Oscar India met the same fate.  At £18,000, the DB7 Vantage was great value for money (£20,250 with premium) as was the DB9 Coupe with the £26,000 hammer recording £29,250 with premium.

Not such good news with the other DB7’s – a Zagato and a Vantage Volante both apparently bid to below their reserves.  And one sometimes wonders about the bidding – the Virage Volante was called at £55,000 and not sold but then one of our clients had a follow up call offering the car at just £60,000.

Normal or new normal – some things never change!
